Former Kenyan Deputy President Kalonzo Musyoka Backs Muturi’s Call for Independent Abduction Investigation

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has called for the establishment of an independent commission to investigate the rising cases of abductions and extrajudicial killings in Kenya. Kalonzo emphasized that only a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation can bring justice and closure to these issues.

Speaking to the press outside City Mortuary on February 1, 2025, Kalonzo urged the government to set up a comprehensive, open inquiry into the growing problem of abductions, which has attracted global attention. He stressed the need for the commission to include a wide range of actors, both state and non-state, including the opposition, the clergy, and civil society groups.

“If the government fails to establish this tribunal, we in the opposition will initiate our own inquiry into these abductions,” Kalonzo warned. He pointed out that such a commission would not only investigate the incidents but also make far-reaching recommendations to ensure accountability and prevent future abductions.

Kalonzo expressed concern about the state’s inability to protect its citizens from abductions and killings, describing the situation as a “free-for-all” where Kenyans are left defenseless.

The call for a probe follows the discovery of Justus Musyimi’s body at City Mortuary. Musyimi had been abducted along with two others, Martin Mwau and Karani Muema, on December 16, 2024, in Mlolongo. While Musyimi’s body was found in Ruai, the other two men remain missing. The case has raised alarms, especially after the police denied that the three were in their custody, despite allegations otherwise.

Kalonzo’s remarks came a day after National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi separately called on the police to investigate and bring those responsible for the abductions to justice.
